Is this just a sales exercise?
It produces a document you can act on with or without me, including the entries recommending you do not automate something. A process that is broken should be fixed before it is automated, and a process that runs twice a month rarely justifies the build.
How long does it take?
Typically one to two weeks depending on scope. Most of it is talking to the people who actually run the processes, because the documented process and the real one usually differ.
What if the answer is that we should not automate?
Then that is the finding, and it is a cheap one to receive at this stage rather than after a build. It is a better outcome than a system nobody uses.
